Raising social awareness on Environment through Cartoons: Seminar at Beacon House School, Islamabad.

An innovative and entertaining social awareness program on the environment aimed at children and young people took place at the Beaconhouse Margalla Campus. This is part of a strategy to increase and raise awareness on safeguarding and protecting the environment in a youth friendly manner. The organizer Nigar Nazar, who can be described as an Art activist has been drawing cartoons with a strong social message for many years.  “It is our responsibility to direct & guide our young people.”  Rather than lecturing, Nigar uses her creativity in reaching out to young people in order to change their attitudes in a non threatening manner.  “This method of interaction is far more productive and conducive in creating an impact on young people’s learning,” she goes on to add.

Nigar has a friendly, down to earth and humorous manner and coupled with her artistic talents of cartooning, creates strong messages on littering, wastage of water and preserving the earth’s natural resources. The laughter and synergy amongst the young crowd created by this approach demonstrates its effectiveness.  Nigar believes that the only way to leave a lasting impact with young people is by ensuring that they can relate to the topic.  This is done by Nigar using images and messages that young people find interesting and can connect with during her interactive presentation.

Nigar believes in working in partnership with schools and colleges and already has received a positive response within Islamabad from establishments who want to give their students an opportunity to explore this important issue.  By working in collaboration schools can add diversity to their curriculum. Educational establishments are already offering students a rich academic program and partnerships such as these offer opportunities for young people to develop socially and emotionally, preparing them to become responsible and caring citizens of their community.

The environment is an issue that many schools have been focusing on for quite some time using art as an important medium to engage young people.  Too often, young people are talked at or spoken to in a tone that dictates blame. This program however, focuses heavily on empowering young people and creating the realization how powerful they can be in bringing about change.

It is however a great challenge, as the reality is people do not give a second thought when throwing trash out in the streets.  Bearing in mind these very real obstacles, the need for consistency, momentum and working in partnership has never been more important than today for Nigar.

Educational establishments are invited to take part in this initiative that will hopefully prove to be an invaluable resource to them and the wider community.
